VLGC terminal in India

Unlocking potential in India

Fuelling India’s Clean Energy Future

BW LPG’s first foray into the fast-growing LPG market in India was the set up of an LPG shipping subsidiary – BW LPG India – in 2017 with a modest fleet of three modern Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs).  Since then, we have grown to become India’s largest owner and operator of VLGC, accounting for approximately 25% of the maritime transportation of LPG into India.

With strong and stable returns from our Indian subsidiary, we took the next step to advanced our growth trajectory along the value chain. BW LPG Infra, together with strategic partners Confidence Group and Ganesh Benzoplast, made an investment of USD 10 million in late 2023 to construct the largest cryogenic storage facility in JNPA Port, Mumbai.

India’s LPG ports among world’s busiest and most congested

India is among the top 10 busiest LPG import terminals in the world, where ~30% of a typical round voyage can be spent waiting at anchor for terminal ullage to be available. This is a business challenge, and a business opportunity.

Largest cryogenic LPG storage terminal facility near Mumbai (2x 58,000cbm)

In November 2023, BW LPG signed agreements to jointly develop and operate the largest cryogenic LPG storage terminal facility at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Association (JNPA) Port in Navi Mumbai, India. With a large installed capacity of 2.5 million tons per annum and served by an exclusive jetty for LPG discharge, the terminal will be able to fully offload the latest fourth-generation VLGCs (93,000 cbm) in a single discharge operation.

Where a lack of terminal ullage is the cause of long waiting times for vessels in port, our terminal once completed, will reduce this waiting time. In turn, this can translate into multiple benefits, most important of which is the competitive and efficient supply of LPG into India.

Largest Cryogenic Terminal in Key Port

Our planned terminal can offer rapid discharge capabilities, handling a full VLGC load in ~36 hours. Set to be the largest cryogenic LPG terminal at JNPA Port, it represents a major leap in storage and supply efficiency for India's energy sector.

Strategic Location for Continued Growth

Located in Maharashtra, India's second-largest base of active domestic LPG customers, our terminal is strategically positioned to serve high-demand areas. Its proximity to states with strong LPG growth potential further enhances its role in securing India's energy future.

Growth potential in an important LPG market

Optimised LPG Supply Chain, Lowered Costs

When built, our terminal will increase available ullage, reducing vessel wait times at port. This efficiency lowers operational costs and enhances the LPG supply chain, creating potential savings that can benefit consumers directly.

Ready to Serve Customers in 2027

Once the required approvals and licenses for the construction of the terminal are received, construction will begin, with estimated completion in 2027.

Strategic location for future growth

The terminal is located in Maharashtra, the state with the second largest number of active domestic LPG customers. It is situated close to India’s first Propane Dehydrogenation (PDH) plant, and is also linked to a major rail line, ensuring connectivity with growing centers of demand domestically.

Growing our downstream presence through partnerships

In addition to our investment in Navi Mumbai, BW LPG Infra also injected USD 30 million in Mumbai Stock Exchange listed Confidence Petroleum, to gain exposure to LPG downstream distribution business. Though Confidence Petroleum, we have:

  • 15 cylinder manufacturing plants
  • 690+ bottling and blending plants
  • 2300+ LPG dealer network pan-India
  • 270+ auto LPG dispensing station
  • 40+ CNG stations
These corporate actions are aligned with our strategy to establish an integrated, future-proof LPG company, and offers commercial benefits and synergies beyond standalone returns.
